Why Isn't My Website Getting Traffic?

A website usually gets little traffic for one of five reasons: Google hasn't found or indexed it yet, it uses different words than your customers search for, competitors are stronger for those searches, your pages don't answer the questions people ask, or nobody is promoting it. Low traffic isn't automatically a design problem, so find the real cause before spending money on a fix.

Reason 1: Google doesn't know enough about your website

Short answer: new websites can take weeks to be discovered, and some sites accidentally tell Google to stay away.

Search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If few or no pages appear, set up Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and check that no important page has a "noindex" tag or is blocked in robots.txt. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools, which also feeds ChatGPT's search.

Reason 2: You're targeting the wrong keywords

You might describe your services one way while customers search for something completely different. A "full-service residential envelope specialist" may be searched as "roofer Laval". Your website should use the language your customers use. Keyword research shows you exactly what that is.

Reason 3: Your competition is stronger

If you're up against businesses with established websites, helpful content and strong reputations, you'll need time and a better strategy. Start with more specific searches, like a service plus a neighbourhood, where you can win sooner. See why your competitor ranks higher on Google.

Reason 4: Your content doesn't answer questions

A short paragraph saying you're a great company isn't enough to rank or to convince anyone. Pages that explain the service, the process, prices or price ranges, areas served and common questions do much better, on Google and in AI answers.

Reason 5: Nobody knows you exist

Search traffic is only one source of visitors. Referrals, your Google Business Profile, directories, social media, email and advertising all bring people to your site. A new business usually needs several of these at once.

The bottom line

Low website traffic isn't automatically a design problem. Find out whether the issue is search visibility, demand, competition or promotion before spending money on the wrong solution.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my new website not showing up on Google?

New sites can take weeks to be indexed. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console, check that pages aren't blocked by a noindex tag, and make sure each service has its own page.

How do I get more traffic to my website for free?

Use the words customers search for, answer their questions on your pages, complete your Google Business Profile, get listed in relevant directories and share your content with your network.

Is low traffic always bad?

Not if the visitors you get are the right ones and they contact you. Ten qualified visitors can be worth more than a thousand who aren't looking for your service.
