If your business isn't showing up on Google, it's usually for one of seven reasons: Google can't find or index your website, your Google Business Profile is missing or incomplete, you don't have pages for what people search, your pages don't match what searchers want, your site is slow or broken on mobile, you have too few reviews or inconsistent details, or other trusted websites don't mention you. Most of these can be checked in a few minutes and fixed in a few weeks.
How to check if Google can find your business (5-minute test)
Before fixing anything, find out where the problem is. These three checks take five minutes and need no tools:
- Search
site:yourdomain.comon Google. If nothing comes up, Google hasn't indexed your website. Start with reason 1. - Search your exact business name. If your website and Google profile don't appear, Google doesn't yet trust that your business exists. Look at reasons 1, 2 and 6.
- Search your main service and city, for example "accountant Montreal" or "plumber Laval". If you appear for your name but not for this, Google knows you but doesn't see you as the best answer. Look at reasons 3 to 7.
1. Google can't find or index your website
Short answer: if Google hasn't indexed your site, you can't rank for anything.
This is more common than you'd think. New websites can take weeks to be discovered. A setting left on during a redesign can tell Google to stay away (a "noindex" tag or a blocked robots.txt file). And if your site was never submitted to Google Search Console, Google may simply not know it's there.
How to fix it: set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and use the URL Inspection tool to request indexing of your main pages. Check that no page you want found has a noindex tag.
2. Your Google Business Profile is missing, unverified or incomplete
Short answer: for local searches, Google shows its map results before any website, and those results come from Google Business Profiles.
If your profile isn't claimed and verified, you won't appear on Google Maps at all. If it's verified but incomplete, with the wrong main category, no services listed, few photos and old hours, competitors with complete profiles will appear ahead of you.
How to fix it: claim and verify your profile, choose the most accurate primary category, list every service, add real photos, keep hours current and post updates regularly. Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through every field, and our Google Business Profile optimization service can do it for you.
3. You don't have pages for what people actually search
Short answer: Google ranks pages, not businesses. If you don't have a page about a service, you won't rank for it.
Many small business websites have one "Services" page that lists everything in a few lines. But people search for specific things: "emergency plumber Laval", "dentiste Plateau", "bookkeeping for restaurants Montreal". A single page can't be the best answer to all of them.
In Montreal there's a second gap: language. If your site is only in English, you're missing everyone who searches in French, and the reverse is just as true.
How to fix it: create one clear page for each main service and, where it makes sense, for the areas you serve, in French and in English. Keyword research tells you which pages are worth creating first.
4. Your pages don't match what searchers want
Short answer: Google shows the page that best answers the question behind the search, not the page that repeats a keyword the most.
If someone searches "how much does a kitchen renovation cost in Montreal" and your page only says "We do quality renovations, contact us", it doesn't answer the question. Vague titles like "Home" or "Services" don't help either.
How to fix it: give each page a clear title that says what it is and where (for example "Kitchen Renovation in Montreal | Your Business"), answer the main question in the first few lines, and include the details people look for: prices or price ranges, process, areas served and FAQs.
5. Your website is slow, broken or hard to use on a phone
Short answer: most local searches happen on a phone, and Google favours sites that work well there.
Huge images, outdated plugins, broken links and forms that don't work all push visitors away, and Google notices. An old site that wasn't built for mobile is a common hidden reason a business slips in the rankings.
How to fix it: test your site with Google's PageSpeed Insights, compress images, fix broken links and forms, and make sure every page is easy to read and tap on a phone. If the site is too far gone, a new website built for speed and SEO is often cheaper than patching the old one.
6. You have too few reviews, or your business details don't match everywhere
Short answer: Google and AI tools trust businesses that real customers talk about and whose details are consistent across the web.
A competitor with 80 recent reviews will usually beat a business with 4 old ones on Google Maps. And if your name, address or phone number is different on your website, your Google profile, Facebook and directories, Google can't be sure which version is correct.
How to fix it: ask every satisfied client for a Google review and reply to each one. Then make your business name, address, phone number and hours identical everywhere: Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, LinkedIn and directories. Never buy or fake reviews; Google removes them and can penalize your profile.
7. Other websites don't mention or link to you
Short answer: links and mentions from trusted websites act like recommendations, and competitive searches usually go to the businesses with the most of them.
If your competitors are listed in local directories, industry associations, local media and partner websites and you aren't, Google sees them as more established, even if your service is better.
How to fix it: get listed in reputable local and industry directories, ask partners and suppliers to link to you, join your chamber of commerce or industry association, and share useful expertise that local media and blogs want to cite. Avoid paid link schemes. Our link building page explains the safe way to do it.

Does this also affect ChatGPT and AI search?
Yes. AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews build their answers from websites, business profiles, reviews and mentions they can find and trust. A business that's invisible on Google is usually invisible in AI answers too. The same fixes above, plus clear answer-first pages and consistent business details, are the foundation of AEO, or answer engine optimization.

Indexing problems and Google Business Profile fixes can show results within a few days to a few weeks. Why does my business show up when I search its name but not my service?

A new site or profile can be indexed within days to a few weeks. Ranking well for competitive local searches usually takes three to six months of consistent SEO work.
Can I pay Google to show up first?
